North Central College presents the Moscow Festival Ballet, performing its full-length ballet “The Sleeping Beauty” on April 29.

The performance begins at 8 p.m. Friday, April 29, in the College’s Pfeiffer Hall, 310 E. Benton Ave. Tickets are $40, $30 and $25; call the North Central College Box Office at 630-637-SHOW (7469) or visit northcentralcollege.edu/showtix.

Moscow Festival Ballet’s “The Sleeping Beauty” features music by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky and choreography by Marius Petipa. A crowning jewel of Petipa’s career, the ballet is often considered the finest achievement of the classical ballet. It is a grandiose and refined blending of the traditional mime, expressive pas d’action and spectacular amusement in a lavish theatrical setting. The fairy tale, complete with a king and queen, fairies both good and evil, a beautiful princess and dream prince, magical stage effects and courtly splendor, lent itself perfectly to the full evening ballet.

“The Sleeping Beauty” is a supreme demonstration of the challenge of Petipa’s style—steel point work, sharply accented spinning turns, soaring leaps, high extensions, daring lifts—and it gives a fairy tale plot lavish stage treatment. It was choreographed in strict association with Tchaikovsky’s music, with themes that are developed and resumed throughout the ballet. Tchaikovsky took instruction from Petipa as to the length, tempo and character of each musical sequence.

The Moscow Festival Ballet was founded in 1989 when legendary principal dancer of the Bolshoi Ballet Sergei Radchenko realized his vision of bringing together the highest classical elements of the great Bolshoi and Kirov Ballet companies. Under his direction, leading dancers from across Russia created a new company, staging fresh productions of timeless classics and commissioning new works.

North Central College’s 2015-2016 Fine and Performing Arts Season is partially sponsored by BMO Harris Bank, Marquette Companies, Nicor Gas, Ryan Hill Realty, Advanced Data Technologies, Savant Capital Management, USG Corporation, Monarch Landing, Naperville Special Events and Cultural Amenities Fund, Illinois Arts Council Agency, DuPage Foundation and Naperville Development Partnership.

This performance is among many ongoing programs at North Central College to enrich and broaden the cultural and academic outlook for the College and community.
