Chicago Afro-Latin Jazz Ensemble performs April 27 at North Central College

Chicago Afro-Latin Jazz Ensemble (CALJE) brings a diverse repertoire of Afro-Cuban jazz and Latin rhythms April 27 to North Central College.

The performance begins at 8 p.m. Saturday, April 27, in North Central College’s Wentz Concert Hall at the Fine Arts Center, 171 E. Chicago Ave., Naperville. Tickets are $30 and $25; call the North Central College Box Office at 630-637-SHOW (7469) or visit northcentralcollege.edu/showtix.

CALJE was formed to fuse the musical treasures of Afro-Latin American music and jazz while including musicians from Chicago’s diverse jazz community. With a global sound and ensemble, this group uses Latin rhythms as a springboard to create aesthetic textures and sonic spaces.

Founded by Nicaraguan pianist/composer Darwin Noguera and Mexican trumpeter/composer Victor Garcia, CALJE is a new voice in the Latin jazz genre. Performing as a duo, Noguera and Garcia emanate a playful interaction of call and response, encouraging participation from the audience. Their repertoire is vast and includes not only Afro-Cuban classics but their own works written for piano and trumpet.

CALJE has performed and recorded with such artists as Grammy winners Howard Levy from Bela Fleck and the Flecktones and Brian Lynch from the Eddie Palmieri group, master percussionist Paoli Mejias and legendary trombonist Steve Turre. CALJE’s debut album “Blueprints” has been called “a Latin jazz masterpiece” by Neil Tesser of the Examiner.

CALJE is involved in educational presentations, varying from elementary to college-age students. In a musical and historical interactive environment, they expose students to the diverse repertoire of Latin America, making learning a fun and insightful experience.

Special opening act performance by Ac•Rock will deliver an interactive a cappella rock ‘n’ roll cabaret improv theater experience. Performing together for more than 20 years, Ac•Rock entertains with favorite rock classics.
